ASYMCA History: | |
Founded in 1861, ASYMCAs collectively make up the premier nonprofit community service organization in America serving our military. ASYMCAs provide service annually to over 500,000 junior enlisted troops and family members at 200 program locations in 18 states and Puerto Rico. In cooperation with the unit and area military leadership, the ASYMCA offers programs and services which strengthen families and encourage individuals to achieve their fullest potential. The beginning of the YMCA service in the military is usually associated with the year 1861, when some 5,000 dedicated YMCA volunteers took to the battlefields of the Civil War alongside America’s uniformed young men. It was the year that Abraham Lincoln commended YMCA leaders for the “benevolent undertaking for the benefit of the soldiers”. The tradition of “following the flag” continued in every war and conflict in which the United States has been involved.
